By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAfter seeing so much suffering, an area pastor decided that the City Hall lawn would be the perfect scene for a special fundraiser benefiting the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the City Council learned at the September 6 meeting. Pastor Johnny Flores told the council that he wished to “share something really good that Santa Paula is doing” in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast in late August, killing thousands, destroying towns and cities throughout Louisiana and Mississippi, and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.“I’ve been moved by the pictures and images I’ve been watching on the news channels, and last week I saw two things that were very interesting,” including a news report of free hotel rooms in Detroit, said Pastor Flores. A Santa Paula Times article about Santa Paula High School student fundraising efforts for hurricane survivors also motivated Pastor Flores to do something to try to relieve some of the suffering of those who fled from Hurricane Katrina, leaving everything behind.
After watching and reading news about the hurricane and its devastating toll, “I decided I wanted to do something tangible,” noted Pastor Flores. The result of that decision is that on Thursday, September 15 at 7 p.m. there will be a gathering “right out here in front of council chambers. We’ll have some speakers come, some local pastors, for an event that will last maybe an hour to give Santa Paulans an opportunity to contribute to the American Red Cross” for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.“We’ll take those funds, whatever we raise that night, and give it to the kids of Santa Paula High School,” to add to their American Red Cross fundraising effort. Pastor Flores invited all Santa Paulans to attend Thursday’s fundraiser, including the City Council.
