Santa Paula man arrested in Fillmore on weapon, other charges

Ventura County law enforcement’s continuing emphasis on stopping gang activity resulted in the arrest of an area man in recent weeks.

A Santa Paula resident was arrested in Fillmore on various charges, including being under the influence of a controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon and an illegal sawed-off shotgun, both found his car and within easy reach, according to a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
Joe Canchola, 26, faces multiple misdemeanor and felony charges after he was arrested on July 29 at about 8:45 p.m. A VCSD deputy assigned to the Fillmore Gang Unit was on patrol when he noticed Canchola sitting in a vehicle parked in the 800 block of Edison Lane and decided to pull over and speak to him. The deputy questioned Canchola and, believing that his actions indicated that he might be under the influence of a controlled substance, arrested Canchola for suspicion of same.When the Gang Unit deputy searched Canchola’s vehicle, he discovered a loaded illegal sawed-off shotgun and a loaded 9mm handgun, both within easy reach of where Canchola had been sitting in the vehicle when the deputy stopped to question him. Canchola was arrested on the additional charges, including being in possession of a concealed weapon and being in possession of an illegal firearm, the sawed-off shotgun. Canchola was taken to the Fillmore Sheriff’s Department Police Station before being transported for booking into Ventura County Jail.
