By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesCookies will be the snack of choice when the Holiday Community Celebration is held Saturday at the Depot, and everyone is invited to join in the fun! Co-sponsored by the Santa Paula Downtown Merchants Association and the City of Santa Paula, the free Holiday Community Celebration will feature nonstop entertainment from 5 to 8 p.m. as well as a Cookie Contest, open to anyone with a super-secret recipe that they would love to show off.The top cookie-maker will be rewarded with a $100 grocery store gift certificate so they can stock up on cookie ingredients for the whole year. The cookie baker coming in at second place will garner $50 and the third place cookie creator will take home $25 gift certificates.“My favorite cookie? I love chocolate chip cookies, especially the ones with nuts,” said City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.Chamber of Commerce President Anna Marie Manzano said that her favorite cookie is “oatmeal, simple isn’t it? Just plain oatmeal.” But Manzano admitted that she has a favorite-favorite: “A sugar cookie toasted brown, no frosting on it….”Manzano will be bringing homemade oatmeal cookies and although she admits that she is no baker, her 13-year-old daughter Allie will help “so they should be better. We’re not going to enter them in the cookie contest, just give them away,” to those who attend the Holiday Community Celebration.
“Hopefully we’ll have brisk weather Saturday so it will be Christmas-y,” Manzano noted. “It would be great to see all the people who enjoyed the parade at this Saturday’s event. I’m really looking forward to the community celebration and want everyone to come out and enjoy the hot cider, music and cookies with their families and friends.”Those entering the Cookie Contest must drop off three dozen homemade cookies at the Depot between 5 and 5:45 p.m. on December 11. Judging by a “Panel of holiday cookie experts” will begin at 6 p.m. said Bobkiewicz.Slated to be cookie judges are the City Council and Ventura County Star food columnist Anne Kallas. Cookie competition entries will be judged on taste, appearance and “holiday magic,” said Bobkiewicz.Entertainment for this festive holiday gathering is geared to the whole family and includes the Presbyterian Bell Ringers (5 p.m.), Isbell Condor Chorus (at 5:30 p.m.), the Half Notes (6 p.m.) and guitarist Randy Miller (starting at 7 p.m.)The historic Depot (located at 963 E.
