By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSanta Paula Police are investigating two separate incidents, which could be described as mysteries involving a man on a bicycle found in the street Saturday and multiple fires in the garage of a home located on Cherry Hill. The Santa Paula Fire Department responded to both incidents, according to a SPFD spokesman.SPFD Deputy Chief Rick Araiza said that on Saturday, Nov. 6 at about 9:30 p.m. a “man down” on Main Street just west of the 12th Street intersection was reported.Upon arrival police and firefighters found a man lying on the pavement in the westbound lane of Main Street.“The man apparently was intoxicated but he said he was hit by a car,” said Deputy Chief Araiza. “The bicycle he was riding definitely had damage, so it certainly might have been a hit and run.”
The unidentified man was treated on the scene by SPFD EMTs and then transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. On Monday, Nov. 8 at about noon the SPFD responded to the report of a garage fire at Cherry Hill, at the extreme north end of the city, where police and fire personnel found evidence of “multiple arsons or accidental sets of fire,” said Deputy Chief Araiza. “It’s kind of tough to figure out what is going on…”Inside the attached garage firefighters found “multiple sets (of fire), some flammable liquid,” and a bottle of engine radiator coolant that had melted from heat. The garage also contained a plastic sink that also showed signs of a fire that had “burned but then burned out by itself…there were several locations in the garage where small fires had burned themselves out.”Damage was confined to shelving worth an estimated “several hundred dollars,” said Deputy Chief Araiza. The SPPD is investigating both incidents.
