California State University Channel Islands has created its Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) designed to provide educational and enrichment opportunities for local residents who are 50 years of age or older. The new program will be launched in the fall of 2004, according to Gary Berg, CSUCI director of Extended Education. The purpose of the institute, funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation, is to offer intellectually challenging courses and learning opportunities from current and emeriti faculty members and other experts at the lowest possible cost, says Dr. Martin Kaplan, LLI director. “We want to offer high-caliber university courses that are more specialized than the usual courses taught at most universities,” Kaplan said. “For example, instead of geology, we might have a course titled “Plate Tectonics of the Pacific Rim.” To take courses, individuals pay a nominal fee to join the Lifelong Learning Institute. There will be no degree requirements or grading for the program. Courses will be offered on the CSUCI campus in eight-week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring of the year. Eight different courses will be offered each eight-week session. Two classes will be held each day from Monday through Thursday, a two-hour class in the morning and a two-hour class in the afternoon. An hour-and-a-half lunch break will allow students to interact with each other and with instructors. On occasion, guest speakers will be invited to address classes.
Members may also suggest topics of interest. As the program continues, a service-oriented workshop may be offered on practical matters of interest, as well as educational travel trips at reduced costs, Kaplan says. For more information or to register, contact Dr. Martin Kaplan at (805) 437-8583 or Marty.Kaplan@csuci.edu.
