By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThree Santa Paula juveniles ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old were arrested on a variety of charges including suspicion of setting a recycling can fire outside a home on East Virginia Terrace, according to a SPPD spokesman.Commander Mark Trimble said that the three unidentified juveniles were arrested on charges of possession of arson materials, vandalism and petty theft. The arrests occurred shortly after the April 13th fire was reported at about 11:20 p.m. on the 1000 block of East Virginia Terrace.Although the fire was quickly extinguished by Santa Paula firefighters it had spread to the fence, causing about $200 in damages.Arson materials can include “gas or lighter fluid or a bottle with a sock stuck in it, things along those lines,” noted Cmdr. Trimble. The vandalism occurred when the “kids threw something through a window in the neighborhood of the 900 block of East Virginia Terrace,” and the petty theft charge resulted from a stolen portable light taken from the back of a residence.
The light was found in the juveniles’ possession when they were taken into custody. The parents of the three boys – 14, 15 and 17 years old – “Had to come to the police station and their kids were released on juvenile citations. The citation notifies the parents that they will be hearing from the Juvenile Court and when they want them to show up,” for a hearing on the charges. All three boys have had prior contact with the police.SPPD investigators “Suspect that the kids did start the fire; they were in the proximity of the fire and carrying arson materials,” said Cmdr. Trimble. The investigation into the fire is continuing, Cmdr. Trimble added.
