By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe city became $12,306 richer when an unexpected pot of gold – all unclaimed money - was transferred to the General Fund. The City Council approved the move as part of the consent calendar at the December 15th meeting.According to Finance Director Tina Rivera, the city has held the money for more than three years.According to law, the fact that the city is in possession of unclaimed money was published in the community newspaper twice.“To date, no claims or verified complaints have been received,” said Rivera.State law also mandates that monies must be returnable for three years; thereafter if no claim is made it can be claimed as property of the governing agency.
The dollar amounts of the unclaimed money range from (the don’t bother) $2 to the (wouldn’t you remember this?) $3,025.56.It’s hard telling what the unclaimed deposits were given to the city for, as most sums are uneven numbers, such as $4.02 and $141.25.Deposits are required for city utilities, to rent city facilities and for recreational class or use fees.According to the twice-published legal notice, names of depositors were not given but reference case numbers were listed. In order to claim the money a claim form had to be completed and verified including name, address, telephone number and Social Security or FEIN number; the amount of the claim, proof of identity and the grounds on which the claim is founded. In all, there were 75 separate amounts of unclaimed monies listed by the city, with 32 showing balances of over $100 and three with balances over $500.
