By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesTwo former Planning Commissioners - David Johnson and Gerald Schmidt - were honored for their service by special presentations by the City Council at the Sept. 15th meeting. The terms of the two professionals - Johnson owns a kitchen and bath business while Schmidt is a manufacturing designer - expired in June.Councilman Ray Luna said Johnson served the commission for almost four-and-a-half years including one year as vice chairman.Johnson not only volunteered his knowledge and experience but also “focused on protecting the rights of property owners,” preservation of the city’s historical character and business promotion during his tenure, noted Luna.“It was a privilege to serve and I thank the city for the opportunity to serve,” said Johnson. “I encourage anyone that wants to participate” to volunteer for such civic duty, which in turn, creates wiser and better citizens. “I want to thank the city for the opportunity that it gave me.”Schmidt was lauded by Councilman Rick Cook who noted that he had asked to oversee the acknowledgement “due to the fact that I served with him on the Planning Commission in 1997” before his election to the City Council.
Schmidt “graciously” served the commission for almost six years, noted Cook, including one term as chairman and two terms as the vice chair.Schmidt has also been active with the city’s Design Review Committee that focuses on retaining Santa Paula’s historic character.Schmidt also “volunteered when needed” promoting overall community safety and welfare through fundraising for Santa Paula Police Department needs.“I will dearly miss you and David Johnson,” noted Cook. “Keep us in mind and watch us. . .”“I had some pretty great mentors, Rick was one of them,” by providing an example of wanting what is best for Santa Paula, said Schmidt.Cook joked that each recipient’s mounted City Tile had not been awarded “for a long time because the city didn’t want to buy them, I think.”
