Assembly: Gorell and Strickland vying for Republican nomination

The race is on for Assembly with what is promising to be a lively campaign. . .the campaign just to get on the ballot that is, with two candidates already splitting Republicans eight months before the primary, and a third candidate is waiting in the wings.

The race is on for Assembly with what is promising to be a lively campaign. . .the campaign just to get on the ballot that is, with two candidates already splitting Republicans eight months before the primary, and a third candidate is waiting in the wings.The seat being vacated by termed-out 37th District Assemblyman Tony Strickland features Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Jeff Gorell squaring off against Audra Strickland, wife of the assemblyman. Mike Robinson, an aide to Sen. Tom McClintock, has also announced his interest in the seat.Gorell, whose first bid for the office ended before it began when he was called to active Navy duty to Afghanistan just days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, was hoping to unseat Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson.As Deputy District Attorney Gorell specializes in juvenile cases.Redistricting changed area state leadership and Gorell has been collecting strong endorsements; this week former Governor Pete Wilson will be campaigning for Gorell, a self-described moderate.
Gorell has been endorsed by former Sheriff Larry Carpenter of Fillmore, the entire Simi Valley City Council and Santa Paula Police Chief Bob Gonzales, among others. So far Gorell is leading in endorsements.Audra Strickland has been collecting endorsements from prominent area conservatives including Sheriff Bob Brooks, Assessor Dan Goodwin, Thousand Oaks Councilman Dennis Gillette and Camarillo Councilman Mike Morgan, among others.Her husband and 32 incumbent legislators throughout the state also support Strickland.Aside from Santa Paula, the 37th Assembly District includes Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Ojai and portions of Simi Valley.Robinson has yet to publicly release endorsements.
