The Santa Paula Theater Center has announced the opening of “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” written by comedian/actor/playwright Steve Martin - directed by Michael Sollazzo and produced by Leslie Nichols - beginning Friday, April 25th at 8 p.m. at the Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 S. 7th St., Santa Paula.

The Santa Paula Theater Center has announced the opening of “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” written by comedian/actor/playwright Steve Martin - directed by Michael Sollazzo and produced by Leslie Nichols - beginning Friday, April 25th at 8 p.m. at the Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 S. 7th St., Santa Paula.Winner of the 1996 New York Outer Critics’ Circle Awards for “Best Play” and “Best Playwright,” “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” is set in 1904 in a bohemian Paris bistro, the Lapin Agile. Steve Martin’s play revolves around an imaginary meeting between a passionate Pablo Picasso and a fiery Albert Einstein. The two young men on the threshold of fame vie for the attentions of a young lady and for each other’s respect in a hilarious battle of ideas about painting, probability, lust, and the future of the world.Bill McDonald (Freddy) has performed most recently on the Santa Paula Theater stage as Moe Axelrod in “Awake and Sing!” He also appeared in “Clue: The Musical,” “Down the Road,” “Burn This” and “Two Gentlemen of Verona.”Michael Sollazzo (Gaston) will be director and actor in this production. The REP Award winner has numerous acting credits, some of which are: “1776,” “Oliver,” “Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Man of La Mancha.”Ron Rezac (Gaston for weekend of May 16th) is a REP Award Lifetime Achievement winner. Some of his Santa Paula Theater Center acting credits include: “A Christmas Story,” “Barrymore” and “A Moon for the Misbegotten.” He has appeared in Ventura County for over 33 years in numerous productions.Michelle Wagner (Germaine) has appeared in Elite Theater’s “Nuts,” “Eleemosynary” and “Clue: The Musical.” Her last show at the Santa Paula Theater Center was “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” appearing as Josie.Will Shupe (Albert Einstein) is a multi-award winning actor. He has been seen recently as Mr. Pontone in “High Button Shoes” at the Rubicon in Ventura. His other appearances include “Guys and Dolls,” “Man of La Mancha,” “Play It Again, Sam” and “Secret Garden.” He is a SAG actor working in commercials, television and movies. He also works with the Young Artists’ Ensemble.Jennifer Nims (Suzanne/Female Admirer), a resident of Ventura and a graduate of Westmont College, has appeared in “The Breakfast Clu,” “Kringle’s Window” and “Not Now Darling.”
Doug Friedlander (Sagot) has done several plays, including “Oliver,” “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” “Dracula,” “Camelot,” “Gin Game,” “As You Like It” and many others.Robert Sanchez (Pablo Picasso) has appeared in numerous plays that include his favorites, “Into the Woods,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “For Whom the Southern Bell Tolls.” He has a BA in Theater Arts from San Francisco State.John Reinhart (C. D. Schmendiman) is an accomplished voice-over actor. His acting credits include, among others, “An Inspector Calls,” “George Washington Slept Here,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” “Taking Sides” and “Moon Over Buffalo.”Sarah Vawter (The Countess) is an Oxnard resident who has appeared in “Blithe Spirit” and “Clue.”Christopher Vasquez (Visitor) has appeared in “Master Class,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Secret Garden” and “The Wiz.”Future productions for the 2003 Season are Oscar Wilde’s Restoration farce, “The Importance of Being Ernest,” directed by David Ralphe, July 11 through August 17; and Conor McPherson’s haunting “The Weir,” directed by Fred Helsel, September 19 through October 31.“Picasso at the Lapin Agile” plays April 25th through June 8th at the Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 S. 7th Street. The performance schedule is Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 seniors and students, and $10 for children 12 and under.
