By Breda GeorgeOn February 18, the students in the music appreciation class at Blanchard Community Library went to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles to see Rossini’s opera “The Barber of Seville.” The Los Angeles Opera has free performances for middle and high school students every year.Free opera tickets are, as a rule, only provided to schools in Los Angeles, but an exception was made in this case because of the excellence of the program at Blanchard Library. The music appreciation class received 16 student and eight chaperone tickets.Maureen Coughlin attended the in-service for teachers and organized the transportation. Breda George spent six classes in preparing the students for “The Barber of Seville,” using books and videotapes about the opera in general and “The Barber of Seville” in particular.
The trip was a great success. None of the children in the music appreciation class had ever attended a live performance of an opera. At the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion it was quite wonderful to see thousands of middle and high school students on their best behavior. The applause that the performers received was probably the most enthusiastic they ever had. After the trip the music appreciation students wrote short paragraphs about the opera. The consensus was they loved it and hoped to go to more opera performances.
