Harold Ray Shoemate

 Harold “Ray” Shoemate passed away Wednesday morning, March 1, 2017 at his home in Santa Paula, with his family by his side. Ray was born in Wild Cherry, Arkansas on December 19, 1931 to John and Delcie (Staley) Shoemate; he was one of seven children. The Shoemate family moved to California when Ray was eight years old. While living in Eaast Ventura (Saticoy), Ray attended and graduated from Santa Paula High School. He was a CIF Champion Gymnast. After graduation, Ray enlisted in the United States Air Force. After completing his 4 year commitment, he left his last duty station in St. John’s, Newfoundland and moved back to Santa Paula. He met and began dating Beverly Sipes. They married in1956. About that time, Ray started and soon completed the Journeyman Electrician apprenticeship program at IBEW local 952 in Ventura, CA.  

Ray and Bev lived in several Ventura County communities before settling in Santa Paula in 1963, where they have resided for the past 54 years. Ray worked in Ventura County as an Electrician for over 40 years and was dedicated to his craft. He enjoyed spending time at his “Rancho”, his property in Squaw Valley, California, as well as taking trips with the “Waylighters” group from his local church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Carolyn, Joyce, Betty, Willa Mae, and Eunice, his brother Junior, and brother-in-law Terry Sipes. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Beverly, sister Barbara Clark, sister-in-law Myrna Harline, brother-in-law Glenn (Mary) Sipes, son Brady (Kathy) Shoemate, daughter Keely (Steve) Brown; grandchildren Michelle Brown, Stephanie (Travis) Tackett, Ashley (Josiah) Beumer, Lauren Shoemate, and Nick Shoemate; great grandchildren Taelor Winegar, Cameron Beumer, and Hunter Tackett, along with numerous other extended family and friends. Ray will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service was held at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo, CA on Wednesday March 8, at 11 am. A small graveside service followed.
