Gussie Lee Abel

Gussie Lee Abel passed away peacefully in Ventura, California on January 4, 2017, after 97 wonderful years.  Gussie was born on November 30, 1919 in Boda, Missouri.  Her early years were spent both in Missouri and in California where she eventually settled for the rest of her life.

Gussie grew up in a large family.  Her six sisters and brother remained close their entire lives, providing their children many great memories.  She loved her high school years and was proud that she graduated with honors.  Her search for knowledge led her to love of mind challenging games and years of playing bridge.

In 1939, Gussie met her future husband, Clell Abel in Santa Paula.  Their union would last 71 years until his passing in 2012.  Most of Gussie’s life was spent as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Daughters, Dena Michael and Susan Elder and her husband Bill survive her.

She is also survived by her grandchildren Lisa Noronha (Joe), Brianne Elder, David Abel, Owen Michael and great-grandchildren Rylee, Carly, Olivia, Marlowe, Adrian, Jackson and Caileigh.

Clell and Gussie lived life to the fullest.  They enjoyed travel and camping with family and friends.  Her claim to fame was her world-class pies.  She was blessed with a magnetic personality.  Her charm, wit and kindness made her special.  Gussie lived a rich, blessed life.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Aegis of Ventura.  Their love and compassion for our Mother enriched her final years.  A special thanks as well, to Assisted Hospice for the excellent care she received.

A celebration of Gussie’s life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Paula on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Santa Paula First United Methodist Church or Assisted Hospice Care.
