A 33-year-old Santa Paula man with three young children was killed Thursday morning in a head-on crash that occurred on a rural two-lane portion of Highway 118, just east of Saticoy.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Johnny Winkler of Santa Paula, was driving a white minivan westbound on Highway 118-Los Angeles Avenue, near North Rose Avenue, June 5, at about 9 a.m. when for an unknown reason, the minivan crossed the centerline. Winkler’s minivan crashed head on into a white SUV that was traveling eastbound on the highway.
Both drivers were trapped in their mangled vehicles and were freed by Ventura County Fire Department personnel.
Winkler was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) Trauma Unit where he died.
The driver of the SUV, 39-year-old Kerri Paris, of Ventura, was transported to VCMC with moderate injuries.
The highway was closed between Vineyard and Rose avenues for about 90 minutes during the investigation.
Winkler, a 1999 graduate of Santa Paula High School, was reportedly working multiple jobs; friends reportedly suspect he might have dozed off while at the wheel of the minivan.
Winkler leaves a wife, Megan Shatswell Jett Winkler, and three small children.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
