The big push for national recognition is on and you can help plant pride in the city this Saturday by volunteering at the special America in Bloom-Santa Paula Beautification Day.

The event is being held just days before the national America in Bloom judges will arrive in Santa Paula for a two-day tour that will determine if the city outranks others of its approximate size on six criteria, ranging from floral displays, landscaped areas and urban forestry to environmental friendliness, heritage and overall impression.

Volunteers have been working on the effort for months and the Santa Paula Downtown Merchants Association funded special merchant flower boxes to complement the oversized hanging baskets and planters that decorate the Central Business District.

Gary Nasalroad of America in Bloom said Saturday’s event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is expected to draw those new to the effort, as well as stalwart AIB supporters of Santa Paula’s ongoing beautification.

Volunteers will meet at the Gazebo and then be sent out to improve targeted areas including the Bike Path, City Hall and Police Station, do random flower planting at city businesses, repot Downtown flowerpots, as well as tackle cleanup of Harvard Boulevard and 10th Street weeds and trash.

Participants are asked to bring gloves, shovels, pruning shears, clippers, trash bags, brooms and dust pans and after their hard work all volunteers will be treated to a pizza lunch.

Nasalroad said the judges will arrive in Santa Paula May 7 and although they will stay in town through May 9 they won’t be staying put.

“There’s going to be a lot of tours and activities all over town, we’re really going to show off Santa Paula,” as the local America in Bloom chapter tries to capture a prize.
