A Ventura man was seriously injured Tuesday after his speeding pickup truck went off a rural road, flew over a ditch and finally was stopped by two lemon trees.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Reid the solo collision occurred January 28 at about noon at the intersection of Santa Paula Street and Cummings Road, outside city limits.

The crash noted Reid was “DUI involved...”

According to Reid, Robert Andrew Kelly, 47, of Ventura, was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck and traveling westbound on Santa Paula Street approaching Cummings Road.

According to witnesses, Kelly was driving at a “high rate of speed and was passing” other vehicles traveling on Santa Paula Street in an unsafe manner.

Kelly continued traveling at an unsafe speed on Santa Paula Street and failed to stop at the stop sign on Cummings Road.

“Kelly’s truck launched over a ditch, traveled through a fence and struck two lemon trees,” that stopped the large pickup truck.

Kelly sustained major injuries in the collision. Ventura County Fire EMTS and AMR paramedics treated Kelly at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center.

“Kelly was determined to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and was arrested for DUI,” after which Reid said Kelly was released to the hospital for continued treatment of his unspecified injuries.

Kelly was the only passenger in his vehicle at the time of the collision that is still under investigation.
