Learning something new and exciting will be on tap at Sunday’s Santa Paula Society of the Arts with Featured Artist of the Month Wendy Lefkowitz showing her prize-winning techniques.

According to SPSA President Kaye Ford, the January 12 meeting will be 2 to 4 p.m. at the Society’s Depot Gallery at the historic Depot, located at the corner of 10th and East Santa Barbara streets.

You don’t have to be a SPSA member to enjoy the meeting and art demonstration where everyone will have a chance to win the artwork.

“Wendy will create two pictures, one landscape and one abstract, with a new watercolor method using Yupo paper, a new slick non-absorbent paper,” said Ford. “Come learn something new and exciting!”

The art of Lefkowitz, a Ventura resident, features whimsical views of the beauty around us. A strong feeling for the glory of nature is reflected in the many floral pieces in her portfolio. Her still life works combine beautiful cut flowers and cherished possessions.

Ford said “Wendy’s mastery of color” is reflected in the softness of a rose petal or the magnificent brilliance of a bird of paradise.

Other subjects such as now neglected but formerly magnificent cars show Lefkowitz’s artist’s eye for the beauty of reflected light and the effect of age and abandonment.

Educated at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York earning a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts, Lefkowitz moved to Ventura in 1977. She has studied with several prominent artists in the community and is a signature member of the Gold Coast Watercolor Society and the Buenaventura Art Association. She is a featured artist at the annual Focus on the Masters Studio Art Tour.

Lefkowitz’s original watercolors and limited edition prints are found in art collections throughout the country and have been accepted into many juried shows. She won first place awards in the prestigious Gold Coast Watercolor Society Spring competition and the Santa Paula Art & Photography Show-sponsored by the SPSA-as well as awards at the Ventura County Fair Professional Arts competition.

She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Ventura County as well as being a featured artist on HGTV Designer’s Challenge.
