The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) is looking for motivated local students to join its award-winning Teen Council. The council raises awareness, gives youth a voice in transportation, and helps develop a much-needed relationship between the Commission and tomorrow’s leaders. The deadline for submitting applications and letters of recommendation is Tuesday, October 1, 2013.
Students must be in grades 8-12 or in their first year of college, between the ages of 13 and 19, and residents of Ventura County at the beginning of the 2013/14 school year. Successful applicants must display leadership potential, personal character, and be able to balance school with participation in the Teen Council.
Applications are available at goventura.org to fill out and email to Donna Cole at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an adult in a leadership role (e.g., teacher, counselor, coach, youth group leader, etc.) who can vouch for the applicant’s leadership potential and personal character. Letters of recommendation can be emailed to the address above or mailed to 950 County Square Dr., Suite 207, Ventura, CA 93003.
“Teen Council is a great way for students to make a difference within their communities by giving them an avenue in which they can have their opinions heard by Ventura County Supervisors, municipal leaders, and the community at-large,” notes Darren Kettle, VCTC’s Executive Director. Plans for this year’s Council include advocating for a transportation issue that affects the Council members, learning how community issues are vetted through the Commission and other local governing bodies, and a field trip using transit.
VCTC launched its Teen Council in October 2011, and won a national award from the American Public Transportation Association for its youth-focused “Student Rider Guide” brochure in 2012. During the 2012/2013 school year, the members of the Teen Council pitched-in at Earth Day events, participated in Metrolink’s Toy Train toy drive, attended a Commission meeting, and created a video for other teens about using public transportation in Ventura County.
