Santa Paula Police arrested a suspected drunk driver Friday evening following a collision and pursuit.
According to SPPD Sgt. Jeremy Watson, the August 16 incident occurred at about 7:43 p.m. when Bike Patrol Officer Chad Peplinski “witnessed the aftermath of a traffic collision in the area of 10th Street and East Harvard Boulevard.” Immediately following the collision, the driver of a red Chevy Tahoe fled the scene traveling east on Harvard Boulevard.
Patrol officers responded to the area and, according to Watson, “with the assistance of multiple bystanders, officers were able to locate the fleeing vehicle.” Although an officer attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of Ventura and 10th streets, the driver failed to yield in spite of the patrol vehicle’s activated emergency lights and siren.
Watson said officers pursued the vehicle through surface streets at which point, “It is believed the vehicle became disabled” in the area of 8th and Main streets. SPPD officers, with the assistance of deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, took the suspect into custody without further incident.
The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Omar Navarette of Santa Paula. Navarette was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run, felony driving under the influence of alcohol, felony evading, and for being an unlicensed driver.
The drive of the second vehicle, Jorge Duran of Santa Paula, was treated on scene by Santa Paula Fire EMTs and ambulance paramedics before being transported to the Santa Paula Hospita. Duran suffered minor injuries in the collision.
