A little history
Former director of the De Colores Art Show XAVIER MONTES working on new projects. “Since letting The De Colores go 2 years ago i have decided to give and devote much of my time to music passing on old mexican favorites (cultural heritage)by way of folk music. Being a musician almost all of my life, ive decided to share and pass on what ive learned to young people especially when i see so many youngsters without the opportunity to learn, in this case, guitar. Music classes with me go beyond just learning to play. I attempt to teach them to focus, listening, practice, determination, share space with others, self estreem. Self esteem is big with me and them. I make sure i try my best to instill pride and self estem and I have seen miracles, eyes light up, and confidence build up right before myeyes.. Also the music itself is, learning music by way of Mexican folk music. Since the Folk Arts is big with me and 98 percent of my students are Mexican-Americans/latinos its just my way of exposing kids to their ancestry, songs their parents, grandparents and great grandparents were exposed to.
A new home
The current site for the De Colores Music is currently teaching music at two sites. The Santa Paula Art Museum(Strings program) one day a week. And the new home (217 N. 10h St site of the First Five program) of the De Colores Music studio which rented office space. Previousely Xavier tought out of his studio apartment, in the park ir even outside his apt in the alley. The New location is the old John Jenkins Christian Day school. wich is loaded with several offices rented by different businesses. The location is perfect with parking, and a fenced in school yard. “Eventually I would like to have my events there and am in the process of being sponsored by other non-profits with insurance so as to be protected when having major events. Another componant i would love to have a Mexican Folk dancing. I WOULD NOT teach it but know several teachers that may consider it. Long term goals are Music, Vocals, Dance, Ceramics, Poetry readings and more.”
