Santa Paula News

You’ll be able to enjoy Cruise Nite with the Cruise Knights, a wow combination that is sure to please car lovers and rock ‘n’ rollers who attend tonight’s First Friday of the Month giant car show.

The June 7 Cruise Nite starts at approximately 5:30 p.m. and lasts until dark with the historic Downtown’s famed East Main Street blocked from 10th to 7th streets. Sponsored by the Santa Paula Police Officers Association and Chamber of Commerce, Cruise Nite runs April through October and attracts car lovers from all over Southern California.

Cruise Nite is a perfect combination of car displays, socializing and music made even more memorable by the chance to enjoy Santa Paula’s famed weather at wonderful restaurants, several that offer outdoor seating. There are many unique shops in the downtown and of course hundreds and hundreds of classic pre-1975 cars. There’s even the chance to purchase a special Cruise Nite T-shirt, each month featuring a different participating vehicle drawn by noted artist Wendell Dowling.

One aspect of Cruise Nite that is especially appreciated is the live music, and the Cruise Knights are event favorites. The Santa Paula-based Cruise Knights - Del Sawyer on drums, Jim Stephenson’s keyboard and guitar, Wes Easley on guitar, Carlos Juarez playing bass, Jerry Byrum handling lead guitar and Paul Skeels on guitar - have gained fame from their Ventura Countywide car-centric appearances.

The group plays and sings hard-charging, old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, at times with a hint of Southern blues and funk that has garnered the Cruise Knights a strong following. And prestigious gigs: in April the Cruise Knights were at the top of the bill for the NSRA Western Street Rod Nationals at the Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield, the largest show on the west coast that always draws a spectacular crowd.

The Cruise Knights will play from 5:30 to about 8 p.m. at tonight’s Cruise Nite.
