Livestock scale, other items taken from students’ FFA farm

The Future Farmers of America were victims of a theft that occurred at the youth organization’s livestock “farm” located on Calpipe Road close to Corporation Street on the extreme west end of the city.

The theft, according to Sr. Detective Ken Clark of the Santa Paula Police Department, involved the scale and “other aluminum items taken from the FFA farm down there” that the members, students at Santa Paula High School, use for their livestock projects. The livestock is later sold at auction at the annual Ventura County Fair.

Clark said students had weighed animals at the facility on January 22 and reported the theft of the scales January 23, the following day. The value of the scales and other items taken was estimated at about $3,000.

Clark said there is a suspicion that the theft might have later involved recycling the materials taken including the scale, not only because of the value of the metals but also because of the location of the crime. “It’s not uncommon to have thefts of recyclables along the river corridor,” where there are homeless encampments.

Clark said residents and businesses in the area should “make sure their properties are fenced and gates are locked” and any equipment or materials secured or, better yet, hidden from sight. “And keep those areas well lit,” as light, said Clark, is a deterrent to crime.

Anyone with information on these crimes or any illegal activity is asked to contact the Santa Paula Police Department, 525-4474. If the caller would prefer to remain anonymous, they can call the SPPD recorded Tip Hotline, 933-4253-1-#.

Those with information can also call Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477). Ventura County Crime Stoppers can also be contacted by texting “Busted” plus your message to CRIMES (274637). Crime Stopper Tips can also be sent via the website, www.venturacountycrimestoppers.org.

Tipsters can be eligible to receive a $1,000 reward.
