The Cardinal boys took the first round of Division 3A CIF-SS basketball Wednesday night, beating visiting Mountain View of El Monte, 61-51.

It was a hard-fought contest with the Cards starting off slow, but coming alive in the second quarter and leading the game from that point on.

Chaminade, ranked #3 in the State, was expected to win their first round game and Santa Paula is likely to play them tonight.  Cardinal Coach Danny Guzman said it’s 90 percent sure that Chaminade will be next.  Chaminade is a private school located in West Hills.

Guzman said his team has had a recent trend of starting slow, “But once we get going we settle down and get going.” As for playing Chaminade Guzman said, “To be the best you’ve got to beat the best.”

Leading in scoring for the Cardinals were Brandon Casas with 14 points, Joshua Garay with 13 and Gabriel Diaz with 9.
