Nominated for three Tony Awards in 2010, this delightful play is set in the Victorian era, just before its corseted women shed their inhibitions. In a seemingly perfect, well-to-do Victorian home, proper gentleman and scientist Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device for treating “hysteria” in women (and occasionally men): the vibrator.
Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory, his young and energetic wife tries to tend to their newborn daughter — and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. When a new “hysterical” patient and her husband bring a wet nurse and their own complicated relationship into the doctor’s home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings must examine the nature of their own marriage, and what it truly means to love someone. The subject matter is treated with delicacy, but it’s meant for mature theatergoers.
ROLES:
Dr. Givings (30s-40s): A specialist in gynecological and hysterical disorders. Loves his wife, but at arm’s length.
Catherine Givings (late 20s): His wife, and a new mother who cannot nurse. Desperate to know what her husband does “in the next room.” Blossoms through the story.
Sabrina Daldry (early 30s): His nervous patient, who becomes Catherine’s curious friend.
Mr. Daldry: (30s-40s): Sabrina Daldry’s gruff and potentially cheating husband.
Annie (mid-20s to late 30s): Dr. Givings midwife/assistant. Becomes entangled in patient affairs.
Leo Irving (20s-30s): A passionate English artist, and another of Dr. Givings’ patients. Falls in unrequited love for Elizabeth.
Elizabeth (30s) African-American, a wet-nurse by default, having recently lost her baby.
