Santa Paula hosted Oak Park in their first Tri-Valley league match Friday.
The JV game was evenly matched. With two minutes left in the game, Oak Park scored on a nice play, working the ball down the right side. But the Cards did not give up. With 1 minute left in the game, Gabriel Mendoza made a nice pass to Humberto Garcia who hustled and beat the goalkeeper to the ball and finished the play. The game finished with a 1-1 tie.
The varsity match was a high paced game from the start. Ricky Zamarron got things started when he was fouled in the box as he was dribbling and a penalty kick was called. Jose Gomez stepped up and scored the penalty kick. Oak Park answered 10 minutes later when they scored on a cross. The halftime score was 1-1.
The Cardinals made some adjustments at halftime and Pedro Magana scored within the first four minutes in the second half from a cross by freshman Giovanni Acosta. Santa Paula scored again when Jose Carmen Magana made a nice pass to Ricky Zamarron who calmly put the ball in the back of the net. Christian Cordova added a late goal when he followed a shot that deflected off the goalie. The Cards won, 4-1.
The varsity record is 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
