Cardinals lose two games at Ventura Kiwanis varsity tournament

The Ventura Kiwanis Varsity basketball tournament was held this past week. In their first game Santa Paula lost to Ventura, 55 to 48. The Cardinals were behind by 14 points at halftime. Santa Paula then closed the margin to one point with two minutes left to play in the fourth quarter. Ventura scored the last six points of the game.
Santa Paula scoring leaders: Joshua Garay, 19 points and 5 rebounds leading the Cardinals; Tim Garcia, 10 points, 5 rebounds; Gabriel Diaz, Brandon Casas, and Nicholas Aguilera, each scored six points.
The next day Canyon defeated the Cardinals, 46 to 26. The game was extremely close for the first three quarters. Canyon was ahead 19 to 15 at the half. The Cardinals closed the gap to two points at the end of three quarters, trailing 25 to 23.
Santa Paula was outscored in the fourth quarter by a 21 to 3 margin. For Santa Paula: Joshua Garay had 10 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter, Isaac Ramirez, chipped in eight points, Brandon Casas, four points, and Tim Garcia two points. Coach Danny Guzman commented after the tough loss, “Eddie Perez drew five charging fouls against the Cowboys.” And he added, “I like the way our players are digging in and playing defense.”
