The varsity football squad ran over the visiting Santa Clara defense Friday, claiming a 39-13 win.

The game had just barely started when Santa Paula intercepted a Santa Clara pass on the Cardinal 27-yard line.  Nine plays later the Cards scored their first touchdown when Juan Carols Magana scored the first of his four TDs for the night.  The Saints turned over the ball five times during the game, all leading to Santa Paula TDs.  Jo Jo Garcia intercepted three passes and Kennedy Frutos also recorded an interception.  The Cardinal defense was at their best and Andrew Vasquez recovered a fumble on the Santa Paula 45-yard line.

The fumble recovery led to another JC Magana TD in the first quarter, followed minutes later by a 30-yard pass to Ramiro Montano III for a TD.

The first quarter ended with Santa leading 21-0.  Santa Clara got their first TD late in the second quarter from two-yards out.

JC Magana had his two other touchdowns in the third quarter.  One off a 50-yard run, the other from 10-yards out.  In the meantime the Saints got their final TD in the quarter.

Moises Salgado gave the Cards their 39-13 edge with a 44-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

“I thought we played well last Friday night,” said Coach Teojua Sanchez. “The team continues to get healthy, LB Christian Garcia was able to return to the lineup after missing the past two weeks (due to injuries). I was pleased on how the players responded after the Bishop Diego game. We are looking forward to Senior Night this Friday against a well coached Carpinteria team.”

JC Magana’s 24 points came off of 14 rushing attempts for 103 years.  He also recorded 103 receiving yards.  Daniel Magana had 72 yards rushing.  Montano had 79 receiving yards and Corey Peck recorded 72 yards.
