Ventura KOA in Santa Paula is hosting an unusual event: the Dirty Girl Mud Run, which is expected to draw thousands of participants on November 3 to the unique campground.
Known for its Zipline, teepees and “glamping” - as in glamorous camping opportunities, KOA Ventura co-owner Scott Cory said he is looking forward to welcoming the participants in the one-day event, an untimed 5K “mud run.” The course will have more than a dozen obstacles, including plenty of mud pits, bales of hay and other race challenges Cory said will make it a day of friendly competition.
Cory said the KOA is not only hosting the event as the property owner, but also to show support of the minimum 2.5 percent of the registration fee the Mud Run donates to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation provides education, early detection and treatment to those with breast cancer.
The Mud Run’s goal for 2012 is to raise at least $250,000. In addition, up to 250 cancer survivors can take part in the Mud Run for free and not have to pay the $75 registration fee; as of October 13, the November 3 KOA event still had 86 complimentary spots open for cancer survivors.
More than 2,100 participants have signed up so far and it is expected there will be more than 1,500 spectators. “They originally were going to have the run in Los Angeles County,” said Cory, “and I called them and said you want to be in Ventura County.”
And in Santa Paula: the daylong event will feature free entertainment, catered food and adult beverages for sale, but Cory said he expects many visitors will also explore Santa Paula.
The Mud Run is for women of all ages and athletic abilities who will tackle an obstacle course designed to push participants slightly out of their comfort zone, but only as far as they are comfortable going; and there are detours. Forming teams is encouraged, and so is helping other Mud Runners to get through to the finish while enjoying excitement, laughter, and camaraderie.
