Paul L. Winans Paul L. Winans, 88, of Santa Paula, died Thursday, July 5, 2001 at Santa Paula Healthcare with complications from emphysema and cancer. He was a nine-year county resident coming from Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1992.Born in Franklin, Pennsylvania along with his twin sister on October 27, 1912, he was the son of Ernest and Minnie Snyder Winans. Paul spent most of his childhood in the Meadville Pennsylvania Odd Fellows Home after his father died when he was 1 year old. He graduated from Meadville High School and attended Allegheny College as a part time student.Paul married the former Anne Kosturick in November of 1933. They lived for more than 51 years on Rogers Ferry Road. He was employed for over 44 years at the Meadville plant of American Vicose, which became FMC Corp., in a variety of assignments including the laboratory, production, industrial engineering and industrial relations departments. He was the plant’s training supervisor for more than 25 years.Paul was a member and past president of the former Vernon Township School Board, a continuing 62-year member of the Meadville First Presbyterian Church, and was active as a church school teacher and ordained elder. His interests included gardening and photography, along with traveling with his wife in their trailer after his retirement in 1975. They traveled throughout most of the United States and Canada, spending alternate winters in Florida and Southern California.Paul is survived by his son, Richard “Dick” Winans of Thousand Oaks; daughter and son-in-law Mary and Thomas Ruther of Walla Walla, Washington; daughter Andrea Hickernell, a wonderful caregiver who shared a home with him in Santa Paula; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, in 1990, his twin sister Pauline in 1933, and his only brother, Merrill in 1974.
Memorial services will be held Monday, July 16, 1:30 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary, 128 S. 8th St., Santa Paula. Interment will be at Greendale Cemetery in Meadville, Pennsylvania.The family requests memorial donations be made to a church of choice or to the Anne and Paul Winans Memorial Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, PA 16335.Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary, Santa Paula.
