September 24: Yamamoto, Geis to be honored at SPUHS AA Alumni Banquet

September 16, 2011
Santa Paula High School

An alumnus who remains popular in the community and a former teacher will be honored at the September 24 Santa Paula Union High School Alumni Banquet.

The annual event will honor Richard M. “Dick” Yamamoto, SPHS Class of 1966, and Edward “Ed” Geis, a SPHS teacher from 1964-1968.

Also being recognized are those classes ending in 6 and 1, from 1936 and 1941 to 2006 and 2011. The Alumni Banquet will be held at the Marriott Courtyard in the Oxnard Financial Center (off Vineyard Avenue and Highway 101).

The event will start with a 6 p.m. Social Hour, with music by Xavier “Big X” Montes. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The cost for the evening of visiting with classmates - all guests will be seated with their classes - is only $40 per person, and those who would like to stay at the Marriott Courtyard could receive a special rate depending on availability.

E. Floyd Griffin, Class of ‘58 is president of the SPUHS AA, incorporated in 1982 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation and led for decades by the late Beverly Harding.

According to the association’s website: “The objectives of this organization are to award scholarships to graduating seniors from SPUHS, to provide a channel of communication among the alumni, to maintain a directory of alumni and to coordinate reunion activities. It also preserves SPUHS memorabilia and attempts to cultivate the heritage and traditions of SPUHS.”

Members elect the Board of Directors, and each class is represented by a Class Correspondent who also offers assistance and direction.

Being a Class Correspondent is a weighty job: “From the Class Correspondents we learn of the upcoming planned reunions and help publicize them. We share address information with the Correspondents and provide class lists and mail labels for the Class Reunions. We encourage classes to plan their own reunions and assist whenever needed. When classes are unable to have a reunion and it is their reunion year, the Association invites the class to the annual dinner so they will be able to have a reunion.”

The 2011 annual dinner is open to all members and selected classes are invited to attend. At these dinners, classmates are encouraged to sit together as classes.

Each year the Directors select a former teacher from SPHS and an outstanding alumnus to honor at the Annual Alumni Banquet, and Ed Geis and Dick Yamamoto are being honored in their respective categories.

Annual or Lifetime Membership is open to any person who attended SPHS, and Friends of SPHS membership is open to any teacher, parent or friend of SPHS. Those interested in joining the Association are invited to complete and mail an Application for Membership.
