By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesShoppers craving the unique, whether it be boutique or books, will have a full day Saturday with the popular St. Paul’s Episcopal/Emmanuel Lutheran Church’s Christmas Boutique and the Friends of Blanchard Community Library Big Fall Book Sale. The Christmas Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 117 N. 7th Street. Christmas crafts, fall and holiday decorations, plants and gift items will be sold at the boutique, which always offers plenty of artistic surprises.Mary Dyvbig, whose husband is Pastor Ron, said the boutique will feature “mostly items handmade and donated by members,” outstanding examples of their personal talents and interests. “We have one lady making centerpieces, that’s all she does; another” intricately embroiders pillowcases, while other members contribute “rag rugs, like in the 1950s. We have another woman who makes beautiful, silky shawls.”There are some items that are not handmade, “fillers,” noted Mary, “but almost everything is handmade... and we have fun, we do.” As do the shoppers, who know that the annual Christmas Boutique offers wonderful items perfect as gifts for others or a treat for themselves.
“We’re very grateful for the community support” and, noted Mary, “I am personally grateful to those who put so much time and work into it,” including those that might have challenges that could interfere with creative output. “We had one member who even worked through her husband’s back surgery... I was humbled by that. I’m humbled,” said Mary, “by the ones that just go out of their way to help.”Also on Saturday, the Friends of Blanchard Community Library Big Fall Book Sale (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) is a tome-lovers delight, offering thousands of books neatly placed in dozens of categories. With hardbacks costing 50 cents, paperbacks 25 cents and Better Books starting at only $1, the sale is the best book bargain in Ventura County. From 9 to 10:30 a.m. there is the Silent Auction featuring rare and/or collectible books, many with an emphasis on local history and characters.
