By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Barstow police officer recovering from a gun shot in the face was a member of the Santa Paula Police DepartmentOfficer John Cordero was a SPPD Cadet, part-time dispatcher and was affiliated with the SPFD during the mid-1980s. Off. Cordero was shot on Dec. 16th after he and two other officers responded to a report that a man had shot his neighbor in Barstow.According to Barstow Police Department Sgt. Lee Gibson, 68-year-old John Salisbury and his neighbor were involved in an argument at about 2 p.m. Salisbury used his rifle to fatally shoot his neighbor and then barricaded himself inside the victim’s home on the 300 block of North 3rd Street.
Off. Cordero arrived on scene with Corp. Albert Ramirez and Off. Andrew Ellis and Salisbury shot all three men.Off. Cordero was hit in the right eye and has been transferred to a specialized eye care center in Westwood for further treatment, said Sgt. Gibson. Corp. Ramirez was shot in the legs and Off. Ellis received bullet fragments in his upper body and head. They have been treated and released from area hospitals.Salisbury, who was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the first three officers who arrived on scene, was finally arrested close to midnight after he gave up to a SWAT team and members of several law enforcement agencies.“John was an excellent employee,” said SPPD Commander Mark Hanson. “He was a Cadet for us for several years and a part-time dispatcher. He was a real nice guy and a dedicated officer to be,” who never wavered from his desire to become a police officer. “I believe he was born and raised here. . .”Salisbury, who has an extensive criminal record including armed robbery and assault on a police officer, has been charged with murder and three charges of attempted murder.
