Cruise Nite, Garden Tour, 1st Sunday at the Airport offer a weekend of fun

It will be a weekend of fun with plenty to do and see in Santa Paula with gatherings and events offering everything from classic cars to beautiful flowers to vintage aircraft!

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt will be a weekend of fun with plenty to do and see in Santa Paula with gatherings and events offering everything from classic cars to beautiful flowers to vintage aircraft!Friday is the kickoff of the 11th season of Cruise Nite where hundreds of pre-1975 classic and vintage cars take to the downtown streets for display amid a party atmosphere.Cruise Nite is held on East Main Street between 10th and 7th streets and this week’s entertainment - staged right out front of the historic Odd Fellows Clock Tower building - will be offered by the popular retro rocking Angela Skeels Band.There’s plenty to do at Cruise Nite from enjoying the cars - and asking the proud owners questions - to finding an area restaurant for a meal or snack. Some merchants also stay open late to entice the Cruise Nite crowd.Cruise Nite starts at 5:30 and ends at 9 p.m.Sunday offers two events including the Garden Tour to benefit Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group and the First Sunday of the Month Open House at Santa Paula Airport.The Garden Tour, presented by Ball Horticultural Co., will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at PanAmercian Seed, located just north of Highway 126 on Briggs Road (taking the Briggs Road exit will lead you right to the door).The event offers the rare opportunity to explore the international company’s garden paths and its greenhouses where flowers will be displayed in settings perfect for any home garden.
Although no flowers will be sold during the Garden Walk visitors will get a rare and special preview of what will be new in the flower world with new varieties set to debut in 2011.The cost for the Garden Tour is only $10 at the gate and all proceeds benefit the always-free services offered by Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group.The Aviation Museum First Sunday at the Airport will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the world famous Santa Paula Airport, 830 Santa Maria St.Open to the public, this free family fun day includes self-guided tours of the “Chain of Hangars” each hangar offering different and distinctive personal collections as well as the history of the airport.“Hot Rods Forever” car club and the “SSR Trucks Club” will exhibit hot rods, custom cars and super sport roadster trucks on the taxiways during First Sunday.And for kids age 8 - 18, the Young Eagle Program offers free plane rides presented by EAA Chapter 724 (for more information and to schedule a reservation, contact Neil Fowler at 647-6994).Visitors - and there are plenty at each First Sunday at the Airport! - are encouraged to stop by The Museum’s Gift Shop where they will find aviation related T-shirts, hats and other related items perfect for unique gifts.All proceeds from the event - which will be cancelled if it rains - go to the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula.
