The Lady Cardinal JV softball team played the Santa Barbara JV team March 17, and the “luck of the Irish” was with them, as they shut out the host Dons. The 10-run mercy rule was invoked after five innings in the shutout game. Pitcher Raeleen Hernandez struck out seven with no walks and allowed only one hit. Lady Cards took advantage of several walks and Santa Barbara errors, combined with 11 hits, to score runs in every inning. Kassie Espinoza and Alexis Hernandez had three hits apiece. Haydee Velasquez got two hits, scoring five runs and getting four RBIs.Coach Sam Cathcart stated he was “very pleased with how the girls hit the ball and ran the bases. The defense stepped it up and played very well…. Everybody played great and hustled at all times.”Only nine girls were available to play, “so it was a lot of fun for everyone,” noted Cathcart. The Lady Cardinal JV season record now stands at 1-2.
