Life Scout Douglas Learn and BSA Troop 305 are re-roofing the stone hut in Mill Park as his Eagle service project. Since late July, they have been using materials donated from H&R roofing materials, Heritage Hardware and Comstock Homes to repair the roof of this landmark in the park.Comstock Homes has had its carpenters repair and replace damaged wood in the roof’s structure, after numerous Scouts from Troop 305 completed the tear-off of the old roof. The building’s roof is now ready for the shingling process in the coming weeks. Advisor Richard Baker of Tremco Roofing has overseen the process for the Scouts and adult volunteers. For advancing to the Eagle rank in Scouting, a Scout must perform a service project to benefit his community or a non-profit organization. Douglas’ roofing work will help protect the hut and its two public restrooms.
The building is owned by the City of Santa Paula, and City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz waived the permit fees, and Public Works has provided an inspector and a dumpster for material removal. Financial support for the project has been given by Santa Paula’s Rotary Club, and Pat and Joanne Cunningham of Ventura.
