By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula Union High School senior who might have stayed up all night after the Senior Prom received critical injuries in an early morning crash Sunday on Highway 126.According to California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Reid the single-vehicle accident occurred at about 5:42 a.m. on May 6 just west of Peck Road.Joseph “Joey” Villa was behind the wheel and traveling eastbound in a 2004 Ford Taurus when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle “veered across the south shoulder and hit a guardrail. The vehicle continued to travel easterly and hit a concrete wall and than a tree” before coming to rest.Santa Paula Fire Department personnel had to extricate Villa from the car before he was treated on scene by SPFD EMTs and ambulance paramedics before being transported to Community Memorial Hospital.
Villa received internal injuries and a fractured clavicle noted Officer Reid.Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation Officer Reid added.“It looks like he fell asleep coming home,” from an after party following the SPUHS Senior Prom held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, said SPUHS Superintendent Dr. David Gomez. “Joey had already dropped off his date and apparently was very tired - had stayed up all night or got very little sleep - and fell asleep at the wheel. He is a good student, no problems and we all wish him the best.”Dr. Gomez said that Villa has undergone “some surgery” including the removal of his spleen and “they’re taking good care of him” at the hospital. “I hear he’s doing okay...”Dr. Gomez said that the accident followed a prom that “was very nice and the students were very safe...it went very, very well overall. We’re sorry about Joey” but anticipate that he will make a complete recovery, hopefully in time to attend next month’s Commencement Ceremony for graduating SPUHS seniors.
