By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula man was arrested after he rented a vehicle from a local agency and didn’t return the car according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.Richard del Rio, 34, is suspected of embezzling the vehicle from the Enterprise Rent A Car office in Santa Paula, according to SPPD Det. Gary Marshall. The incident started when del Rio rented the 2005 Chevrolet, valued at about $15,000, from the local Enterprise Rent A Car office on Feb. 18, said Det. Marshall.“He rented the car and said he would return it a week later on Feb. 25 but when he hadn’t returned it,” Enterprise reported the missing vehicle. “We were able to obtain an address in the Bakersfield area outside city the city limits” and contacted the Kern County Sheriff’s Department notifying them of the alleged embezzlement as well supplying the department with the identifying information for the missing vehicle.
“The Kern County Sheriff’s Department arrested del Rio,” who was also wanted on an outstanding $2,500 warrant out of Ventura County “plus our fresh charge,” noted Det. Marshall.Del Rio was booked and released from a Kern County Jail after he made bail.“We just filed the charge with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office,” noted Det. Marshall.Having cases of vehicle being embezzled “is fairly rare for us at least,” he added.Since the person who rents a vehicle is legally in possession until the agreed upon return date, auto theft generally does not apply to such incidents, but embezzlement charges do apply.
